7 most famous dogs in the world

Gentle, friendly and family-oriented, the Labrador Retriever has been America’s most popular dog breed for 21 consecutive years, and it’s easy to see why. This versatile pup comes in three color variations, is active, trustworthy and (of course) adorable. Originally bred to work along fishermen, Labs are true “retrievers,” accompanying hunters to retrieve game or just fetching the newspaper. Labs are also trainable and possess a calm temperament, which is why millions of Americans make this breed a part of their families.

2. German Shepherd

The German Shepherd catapulted to popularity in the 1920s following the film Man from Hell’s River, featuring the famed Rin Tin Tin. The German Shepherd is an excellent companion dog, but it’s also one that is consistently used in service — either as a police or military dog. TIME even named a German Shepherd its distinguished “Animal of the Year” for helping to take down Osama bin Laden with Seal Team Six. (To be fair, the breed also could have been a Belgian Malinois.) If that’s not a breed to love, we don’t know what is.

3. Beagle

In somewhat of a surprise move, the Beagle rose on this year’s most popular list, knocking the Yorkshire Terrier out of the number three position. We think that this heart-wrenching video might have been a factor, but in fact, the Beagle is the only breed to rank in the top 10 every year since its acceptance to the AKC registry in 1885. The Beagle is a happy pup that enjoys the company of other dogs and humans, even if it’s prone to follow its nose to mischief from time to time.

Often seen as the classic American pet, it’s no wonder that the Golden Retriever has consistently found itself on the top of the AKC’s most popular list. In fact, there is nothing to dislike about this sporting breed. Golden Retrievers are active, friendly, beautiful and versatile, often acting as guide or search-and-rescue dogs. With an even temper and playful attitude, a Golden is the perfect family pet.

This petite pup is celebrated for its large personality, which might explain why it has been near the top of the AKC most popular list for decades. Yorkies, as they’re lovingly known, hail from the English city they are named for, where they were utilized as rat wranglers. Today, the breed is desired for its portability, adaptability and lasting energy

6. English Bulldog

As the mascot for many universities and organizations, bulldogs have seen their popularity increase over the years, rising in the list from number 19 in 2001 to number six. Bulldogs are known for their short legs, smushed face and, of course, their slobber. But they’re also excellent family pets — gentle, protective and easy to groom.

7. Boxer

The Boxer has held steady in the middle of the popularity list for the past decade, but don’t count this lovable breed out. Boxers adore their humans, especially children, and are both protective and patient. According to the AKC, this breed was developed in the 19th century for the purpose of dog-fighting. The dog would stand on its hind legs to battle its opponent, which earned it the name Boxer.
